PSF Refusing 1.5M from US Government
2nd November 2025
In January 2025, the PSF (Python Software Foundation) submitted a proposal to the US government National Science Foundation under the Safety, Security, and Privacy of Open Source Ecosystems program to address structural vulnerabilities in Python and PyPI.
After a few months the PSF got a response from The NSF (National Science Foundation) for a $1.5M grant. The terms of this grant said “do not, and will not during the term of this financial assistance award, operate any programs that advance or promote DEI, or discriminatory equity ideology in violation of Federal anti-discrimination laws.” which means that PSF cannot promote equality during the period in which the NSF gives them the 1.5M. The Python Software Foundation rejected this because equality is a core value of the Python Software Foundation.
